Our guests aboard our June 12th "Around Mull: Inlets and Islands" cruise saw a fantastic array of wildlife; Ospreys on the nest while cruising to Loch Sween, porpoises on the way to Colonsay, and a pair of golden eagles soaring over the gardens at Colonsay. During an alfresco lunch, anchored in Balfours Bay, guests saw an astounding further range of rare wildlife: an otter was swimming among the kelp with seals nearby, two corncrakes were clearly heard onshore and then unbelievably, a minke whale surfaced in front of the boat, flipping its tail high, then diving out of sight. On the same day on the way to Loch Scridain, two basking sharks were seen. The rest of the week brought more basking sharks at Staffa, Gometra and on the way to tobermory as well as puffins, guillemots, cormorants, shags, razorbills and fulmars on Lunga. While anchored in beautiful Loch Spelve and tucking into mussels from the local mussel farm , two sea eagles were spotted overhead by guests, a delightful end to the week. Our guests aboard our "Heritage and Wildlife of South Argyll" cruise in the same week were equally fortunate with sightings of porpoises, dolphins, a basking shark, deer, wild horses, wild goats, golden eagles, ravens and a wide range of sea birds including the puffins which are still around Loch Fyne.
Wildlife report on our May Cruises
People dont always immediately connect the Clyde Estuary with a pristine natural environment which is a haven for wildlife; but its true. Our guests aboard our May "Heritage and Wildlife of South Argyll" cruises saw porpoises, dolphins, otters, seals, wild goats, wild horses and deer. Bird life included manx shearwaters, kittiwakes, fulmars, red breaster mergansers, canada geese and gannets plus, we are delighted to report, lots of puffins!
A Wildlife Bonanza on our April Cruises
Our season got off to a thrilling start with excellent wildlife spotting and also some fabulous wild shellfish sampling! A pod of Dolphins delighted everyone by playing around our vessel, the Glen Tarsan, just off Mull, to the dramatic backdrop of Duart Castle. During the week the lobster pots revealed a good crop of crab which were cooked to perfection by onboard chef Gary. Guests were taken ashore at a secret location to harvest wild oysters from the beach and then have them served up for dinner. Because of the calm weather the Glen Tarsan was able to drop guests off on the tiny Island of Lunga in the Treshnish Isles where they were able to get close up and friendly with the nesting puffins and many other species of birds.
We were very pleased to have travel writer Jeanette Scott on board for the quality travel guide SimonSeeks. Click here to find out what Jeanette thought of her Majestic Line cruise
Meanwhile on our Heritage and Wildlife of South Argyll cruise, porpoises were seen every day, with a good selection of birdlife also spotted, including a Sea Eagle. The seals were out in numbers, enjoying basking in the splendid April sunshine!
